DEFINING INFORMATICS

Since coined by Europeans about half a century ago — and several times (re)defined since — Informatics still allows for different interpretations and customizations.

Usage has ultimately defined Informatics as the fundamentally interdisciplinary field of study which investigates how information is created, gathered, represented, structured, retrieved, processed, used and communicated in a context where computers and humans closely interact.

New and rapidly emerging, Informatics provides a societal-centered perspective for the application of Information Technology (IT) to real-world problems.

Contributing disciplines

As a converging and linking discipline, Informatics is considered to have art, science and human dimensions.  It can be seen as both encompassing and being supported by computer science, cognitive science, psychology, artificial intelligence, and information science.

Ramifications

Amalgamated with the name of an established discipline, such as in geoinformatics, cheminformatics, community, library, law, and healthcare informatics, it represents the specialization or application aimed to serve that particular discipline.

HEALTHCARE CONCENTRATION (HEALTHCARE INFORMATICS)

Healthcare informatics (HCI), often referred to as health or medical informatics, is one of the most developed Informatics specific areas of focus. In the US, the term HCI caught on even before the term Informatics itself.

HCI can be defined as the applicative discipline focused on the optimal use of IT in health sciences and health care delivery systems.  Concrete areas of interest in this context gave rise to such HCI sub-disciplines as nursing, dental, and public health informatics and bioinformatics.

HCI reflects the widespread acknowledgement of the key information handling roles of non-medical healthcare professionals, and also the patients themselves, and the increasingly significant role that IT plays in the provision of all medical services, health research and public health policies.

HCI is incessantly and significantly developing in both its research and operational aspects.  HCI technologies can systematically improve individual and community health status while reducing costs.  Understanding the role that IT can play in the provision of medical services and their administration, and the pursuit of biological questions, is of paramount importance for society.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

I2Tech is meant to supplement a student’s major program study. Students minoring in I2Tech are expected to:

*      Acquire the conceptual basis needed to comprehend the design, application, and effective use of IT.

*      Acquire the basic set of skills needed to assist knowledge-intensive organizations in an increasingly IT-driven and information-rich world.

*      Develop competencies in leadership, organizational communication, data, information and knowledge management, organizational culture, strategy, and systems perspective.

*      Understand the multidisciplinary aspects and teamwork involved in the design and application of IT.

*      Become fluent in the application of IT to real world problems, and in the development of new uses for IT.

*      Understand the impact IT has on people and society’s behavior.

The I2Tech’s healthcare concentration will provide students with additional knowledge and skills including:

*      An understanding on the theoretical foundations and current applications of Informatics in health sciences and health care delivery systems.

*      Understand how to evaluate, select and deploy healthcare informatics solutions, in particular, electronic patient record systems.

FAQs

Informatics… information technology… computer science… are they all the same?

Informatics is broader in scope than these related disciplines, and focuses on the best applications of IT, based on its social aspects, and is therefore less technical. Informatics has its own conceptual and theoretical system-based foundations.

What makes graduates with an Informatics minor distinctive?

Their human-centered perspective of IT, supported by their understanding of human organizational structures, and their contextual adaptability.

Why do students choose Informatics?

Other than the obvious financial and professional opportunities, students find in Informatics the perfect opportunity to work with IT in inventive ways.  The choice of informatics as a minor often relates to another individual interest.

Why do employers choose grads with Informatics background?

Because those graduates show well-developed and well-balanced problem solving and IT systems design skills.

Is this minor right for me?

If you are convinced that the use of IT is key for your professional life, but is not your primary focus area, minoring in I2Tech may be a significant choice.
