Paul Nelson, an EE undergraduate student of Prof. Xun Gong, has been awarded the IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate Scholarship. As a winner, the student gets $1500 in cash and $1000 travel fund to 2008 International Microwave Symposium in Atlanta, GA (>10,000 attendees). His bio and research project summary will also be published in IEEE Microwave Magazine. Currently he is working on his B.S. thesis with Honor in Major, and he will continue as a graduate student from this summer at UCF.

Greg Tener, a Ph.D. student of Prof. Narsingh Deo, has been awarded a fellowship for participating in 2008 Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI) sponsored by the NSF. This all-expense-paid summer research program is intended to build institutional partnership between the scientific community in the U.S. and Central Europe. Under this Fellowship, Greg will be working on parallel algorithms for solving hard cases of the graph-isomorphism problem, with Prof. Ludek Kucera of Charles University in Prague.

IEEE Electron Devices Society, IEEE and AVS Student Chapters of UCF and UCF School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science welcome you to IEEE Electron Devices Colloquium to held from Feb 21-22nd, 2008 in UCF at the Harris Corporation Engineering Center (HEC) Eng III, Room 101. This colloquium will provide an excellent opportunity for UCF graduate and undergraduate students to learn about the state of the art in micro/nanoelectronics, to interact and exchange ideas with the speakers, and to discuss research activities. Many areas of research shall be covered by experts in the field of Electrical Engineering, and the detailed program is enclosed. Refreshments will also be provided. EECS Paper on Evolving Drum Tracks Wins Best Paper Award

"Scaffolding for Interactively Evolving Novel Drum Tracks for Existing Songs," by students Amy Hoover and Michael Rosario, and EECS Assistant Professor Kenneth O. Stanley, won the Best Paper Award at the Sixth European Workshop on Evolutionary and Biologically Inspired Music, Sound, Art and Design (EvoMUSART 2008). EvoMUSART was just held this year in Naples, Italy. 31 papers competed for the distinction this year.

Another note of interest is that Amy Hoover is an undergraduate honors thesis student supervised by Dr. Stanley. It is quite unusual for an undergraduate to win an award at an international event. Part of the work was completed by her during the 2007 summer Advances of Machine Learning in Theory & Applications (AMALTHEA) program held at UCF, which was supported by NSF.
