Research & Collaboration
UCF's Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS) has changed dramatically in recent years. In 2007, EECS research funding exceeded more than $11.9 million, and for 2008, we are approaching record-setting numbers, with research expenditures reaching an average of $140K per faculty member. Cutting edge, exciting research goes on in every discipline within the Department of EECS and is strongly rooted in technologies and applications that solve real problems in the global marketplace. The School's existing strength in many high-tech areas has earned EECS international prominence and exposure in many areas, including:

To support our rapid growth, the university dedicated the Harris Corporation Engineering Center in January of 2007. The four-story, 100,000 square foot building serves as the home of the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. This remarkable building is the crowning facility of the engineering and computer science complex. It contains educational and research laboratories, offices for both faculty and support personnel, collaborative space for research projects, support space for student advising, seminar meeting rooms and classrooms. The state-of-the-art facility allows the school to upgrade student support services, research and teaching laboratories, as well as facilitate faculty and student interaction and advanced research. UCF's Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science is truly a community of innovators, pioneering new research to solve 21st century challenges.

Industrial Incentive Programs
UCF-Industry Fellow Program
The Office of Research & Commercialization has announced a new program that encourages and recognizes university principal investigators who sustain industry-university research relationships by bestowing on them the title of "UCF-Company Name Fellow." These collaborations contribute significantly to the education of our students and the growth of our community through advancements in products and services. Faculty researchers who secure research and development funding from an industry sponsor for a minimum of five years and $500,000 are eligible to carry this title.
To learn more about this new program and to complete an application, please see the announcement.
Florida High-Tech Corridor (FHTC) Industry Matching Research Programs
- Annual Call for Proposals - Closed
- Open Solicitation
This program will remain open until the maximum commitment level is reached. Proposals are sought for partnership projects between University of Central Florida (UCF) faculty and regional high technology industries along the Florida High Tech Corridor (FHTC). The primary goal of the FHTC is to attract, grow, and retain high technology companies in the Florida High Tech Corridor area. This program is specifically designed to expand the research activities of an FHTC industry partner by providing matching funds to leverage research collaborations between Industry and UCF. Florida High Tech Corridor (FHTC) Open program funding, is a ratio of 3:1 cash and in-kind match. For example, if you are requesting FHTC funding through this program for a project totaling $120,000, the maximum amount that can be requested from the FHTC Industry Matching Research Open Program is $30,000. The industry partner would contribute $90,000 cash and $90,000 in-kind funding. This should be documented through a signed letter of commitment or, in the case of an award, the award document.
- Phase II SBIR/STTR External Investment Program
This program will remain open until the maximum commitment level is reached. This program is specifically designed to expand the research activities of an FHTC industry partner by providing external investment funds to small companies to leverage research collaborations between Industry and UCF to assist in obtaining a Phase II SBIR/STTR award.
While projects may be proposed in any discipline, applications are particularly encouraged in areas contributing to the development of the high technology sectors encompassed within the Florida High Tech Corridor Initiative. The list below directly reflects the interest and goals of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council and the map illustrates the applicable Florida counties:
- Aerospace
- Nanotechnology
- Biotechnology
- Optic and Lasers
- Information Technologies and Services
- Renewable Energy
- Manufacturing Design
- Software Development
- Marine Technologies
- Simulation and Training
- Medical Products

Industrial Advisory Board (IAB)
Industry involvement is essential to the success of the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science's (EECS) educational and research mission. Strong industrial support ensures that EECS' research and educational efforts address the needs and challenges of the industry, while supporting and enhancing our infrastructure, students, curriculum, and research.
The goal of the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) is to develop the leaders of tomorrow by combining the academic excellence of EECS and multi-disciplinary research experiences with real world applications. The IAB builds partnerships between our researchers and companies that have a strategic interest in electrical engineering & computer science development. These partnerships provide an opportunity for industry to work with EECS faculty on joint research and development funded by government and industry. Our goals are to foster broad intellectual interactions with industrial partners and to facilitate the rapid implementation of the Department's technology for the benefit of society. The IAB provides key opportunities for industrial partners to connect with EECS researchers through focused workshops, seminars and student recruitment opportunities as well as an Annual Industry Day.
The IAB also provides research direction involving areas of pressing industry need and concern and expedites the placement of our students, research results, and innovations to industry. Efforts are made to keep industry informed of the Department of EECS' research activities of interest and to serve as a point of contact for any industrial organization wishing to take advantage of the various services available through the school. In cooperation with the faculty and research staff, EECS works to achieve meaningful relations with industry.
