CS 227 meeting -*- Outline -*- * policy for cooperative learning ** how it works ---------------- HOW IT WILL WORK 1. Will form groups of 3 (or 4) + size 3: at most 1 `A' on test 1 + size 4: at most 2 `A' on test 1 + all have same TA 2. For each problem, You handwrite your own solution or get stuck and write why. 3. Your group meets, compares solutions, helps those stuck, decides on solution, types them in, debug, test, print. 4. Group leader assembles printouts, testing, and handwritten solutions, writes Leader: I.A. Leader I. Did Work M.E. Too to certify who participated 5. Discuss what worked, didn't, changes; add summary of that to the homework 6. Group leadership rotates --------------------------- the group leader is responsible for certifying that all group members started all the problems or got stuck, that they participated in solutoins of some, that they understand all the solutions -------------------------- DON'T DO THIS 2. Go to the meeting without writing a solution or getting stuck 3. Your group meets, divides up problems, you do 1 out of 3. 4. Group leader assembles printouts, testing, and handwritten solutions, writes Leader: I.A. Leader I. Did Work M.E. Too to certify who participated 5. Group leader writes that all went well. 6. Group leader is always I.A. ------------------------ points 2 and 3 are stupid, will hurt tests - won't see how to start all - won't understand all of them points 4 is cheating point 5 prevents improvement repeat how it should work, note self-correcting ** leadership --------------------- GROUP LEADER Leader responsible for: + coordinating the work + making sure everyone understands all the problem solutions before they are handed in. Once a group leader, can't be again till all others are. ------------------ ** cheating ---------------------- WHAT IS CHEATING ON A GROUP PROBLEM? Certification that you - participated - understand all solutions when that is false. Both you and the leader would be guilty. ---------------------- ** which problems ---------------------- WHAT PROBLEMS ARE GROUP PROBLEMS? All regular and basic problems are. Extra credit + best done individually + can be done by these groups - no special groups for extra credit - don't pressure members ---------------------- ** questions have them, at their seats, in groups write down as many questions about this as they can (1 min.) collect these, after answering for a while. Tell them to look at section 6 of /home/cs227/doc/red-tape.txt for details.
