ABET Criterion 3: Student Outcomes

The following is taken directly from the Criterion 3 section on Student Outcomes from the ABET review criteria:

The program must have documented student outcomes that prepare graduates to attain the program educational objectives. Student outcomes are outcomes (a) through (k) plus any additional outcomes that may be articulated by the program.

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  4. an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
  5. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  7. an ability to communicate effectively
  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  9. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues
  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

CS Senior Design and ABET

CS Senior Design is the only course in the curriculum that covers ALL of the a-k outcomes above. Relevant subject matter is discussed in lectures in Senior Design I and students are tested on that material. Students are exposed to current topics in computer science by a host of CS faculty and industry presenters that discuss their current research and project ideas. Naturally students work in teams and have both a written and public oral project presentation requirement. Legal and ethical issues such as NDAs, software licensing such as copyleft, GPL, and open source, intellectual property and patent rights, and government regulations such as COPPA are discussed as well. Class attendance is mandatory.
